PT. Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Jakarta is a limited liability company in which a majority of its shares are owned by the Jakarta Government. The company was established on the 17 of June 2008, in which it becomes the pioneer in MRT system in Indonesia where it introduced a new mode of transport across the capital. PT. MRT Jakarta is responsible for the construction and development of the MRT infrastructure in Jakarta, managing and operating the MRT system and as well as developing and managing properties around the MRT stations and train depots.

The MRT project was first initiated back in 1985. However, the project was not declared a national project at the moment and so progress moved to a standstill. It is not until 2005 that the president of Indonesia at that time declared MRT as a national project. Since then, the government of Indonesia and the Provincial government of DKI Jakarta started to coordinate and seek for funds for the initiation of the project. Loan funds are provided the Japanese government to accelerate the project.

In 2006, a financing agreement between PT. MRT Jakarta and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) was signed and so the funds started to enter the country for the MRT project.  The JBIC studied the proposed designed and also gave several recommendations to the Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta and the company.

Implementation of MRT development involves numerous government institutions, both at the level of Central Government and the Jakarta Provincial Government and PT. MRT Jakarta itself. Therefore, it requires numerous budget documents involving different activities and processes, working together towards a same end product, namely MRT construction.
